Pickens County Habitat for Humanity -Philanthropy

Serving the Clemson Area Since 1981  EIN: 57-0725702

Pickens County Habitat for Humanity aims to eradicate the use of substandard housing and break the generational cycle of poverty for individuals and families in Pickens County by partnering with those in need of an affordable, safe, and decent home. Partnering families complete 200 hours of sweat-equity, which not only keeps the down payment of a Habitat home affordable, but also builds pride and dignity in their future home. Families must physically build their home and other Habitat homes as well as work at the ReStore and complete 11 courses of financial literacy – all before being allowed to move in! Habitat homes are built almost entirely with volunteer labor – this keeps the home affordable for families in need. We work with those who are spending more than 30% of their income toward housing that is oftentimes unsafe and unsuitable for living. Families pay a monthly mortgage – Habitat homes are not free! Building a safe space for children to grow up in with their families is our organization’s way to ensure that life’s other challenges may be faced head-on, without the worry of an unsafe street, an eviction, or losing everything because your housing is too expensive.

Pickens County Habitat partners with individuals and families in need in Pickens County to build safe, decent, and affordable homes. Families will pay a monthly mortgage that will never exceed 30% of their income – helping them to plan for life’s emergencies and future careers and growing families. Our sweat-equity program requires 200 hours of physical labor building Habitat homes and completing financial literacy courses – this ensures an affordable down payment and the needed work ethic to be a homeowner. Becoming a homeowner is a definite way to escape the clutches of generational poverty and helps to level the playing field for those individuals who have been making ends meet in nearly impossible situations.
